Roulette for the Curious

Roulette is a game of chance named from the French word meaning "small wheel". It was the French who first devised this casino game in which a croupier spins the wheel containing numbers from 1 to 36 in one direction and spins a smaller ball at the outer edge of the wheel. The ball would eventually fall into the numbered pockets and the player who bets on the winning number gets to be paid according to the standard payout scale.

The wheel is numbered from one to thirty six in alternating red and black pockets. The pockets are not in any numerical order with a green pocket numbered 0 and in some wheels, especially the American wheel has a double zero pocket.

Players can place their bets on any single number, any grouping of numbers, any color or whether odd or even numbers. When the dealer announces that it is time for "no more bets", betting is closed. The number where the ball settles is called the winning number and a payout is given.

The roulette table has never been beaten because the chances of winning are so slim that the house will always get all the bets that were placed. The winner will only get a small portion of the share while the house will take all the rest of the bets. This is called the house edge and if a player would continue to place their bets until they run out of money then the house still wins a 100% in the long run. He may win a few rounds but this house advantages is the reason why casinos like this game so much because it continually brings in the money for them.

There is no real strategy in beating this game because the odds are always in favor of the house. Be ready to lose money, if you think you can win from this game. Always know when to quit because if you don't you might just end up betting all your money and then the house will surely get all the winnings.

Do not be a big loser! The big loser is the person who plays with money they cannot afford to lose in the first place. Gambling is an entertainment expense and blowing money in it if you could not pay for your rent or groceries is definitely a big and foolish mistake. One should only play if they can afford to lose extra money in the first place.
